250 PERSONS BENEFIT FROM TEAM OF HOPE (TOH) ANNUAL FREE SURGICAL PROGRAM IN UPPER EAST REGION

As part of efforts to mobilize collective action towards responding to the health needs of people on the margins of society, the Team of Hope (ToP), a non-governmental organization based in the Upper East Region, has once again successfully organized its annual free surgical outreach program for the people of Buluk and its environs.
The exercise,
which commenced on the 20th of November 2023, and ended on the 24th of
November 2023, was led by Dr. Alhassan Jaabir, the Lead Surgeon, and Dr.
Benjamin Akingkang, the executive director and founder of the organization, and
supported by other medical professionals.

The Team composed
entirely of Medical Doctors, Nurses, Anaesthetist, and Orderlies, operated
concurrently in three centres namely the Sandema District Hospital, Sandema;
St. Lucas Hospital, Waiga; and the Fumbisi District Hospital, Fumbisi by three
(3) separate teams respectively.
A total of 250
patients benefitted from the exercise. Cases treated included Goitre, hernias,
hydrocele, Uterine fibroid, abdominal masses, and Uterine Prolapse, among other
medical conditions.
Clients from
Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, North East, Upper West, Upper East, North
East Regions, and Burkina Faso travelled to the various centres to partake in
the exercise.
Each year, the
team organizes free surgical and treatment exercises for people in impoverished
parts of northern Ghana and beyond. Since
its inception, the organization has
provided varied health services, including free medical screening and
operations to hundreds of patients across the region and its surroundings.

ABOUT THE
TEAM OF HOPE
The Team of Hope
(ToH) is a non-profit organization incorporated in Ghana to, among others,
mobilize collective action towards responding to the health needs of people in
impoverished parts of northern Ghana. Since its founding, the ToH has impacted
the lives of hundreds of people through life-enhancing surgeries and general
medical care, delivered gratis.
The Team of Hope
was founded in 2016 by Dr. Benjamin Adebasui Akinkang.
Growing up in
Buluk, he experienced first-hand, the widespread health poverty associated with
the deprivation of the inhabitants. This is evident from the massive response,
year-on-year to community calls for health assistance. The existing health
burden is exacerbated by widespread poverty, ignorance, and partly inequitable
development, characterized by almost non-existent health amenities serving
these communities. Another significant barrier to decent healthcare is
ignorance – the sheer lack of knowledge and culturally ill conceptions about
the existence of treatments for ailments like hernia, hydroceles, and uterine myomas,
among others.

FUTURE OF
THE TEAM OF HOPE
The organization
started its operations at the Sandema Municipal Hospital and later added
Fumbisi District Hospital, St. Lucas Hospital, Wiaga and Paga District
Hospitals as demand for the teams’s benevolent services increased. Plans are
far advanced to extend its services to the North East Region of Ghana.
According to Dr.
Akingkang, the Organization has relied on the financial support and pro bono
efforts of Team members and field workers over years.
Accordingly, the
ToH has productively applied these resources to vital interventions for people
on the margins of society to provide Hope through health. These efforts, he
said, have been widely recognized by private and public agencies in Ghana.
One such recent
recognition was by the MTN Ghana Foundation and its flagship program, MTN
Heroes of Change Season V (2019) – culminating in the organization founder’s
participation and eventual victory in the Health Category of the program.
